Vowel Sounds and resonance

In order to sing beautifully you have to become resonant. In a way that is the difference between singing and shouting or screaming.The more resonant the sound the more beautiful the voice.

The only musical sounds we sing with are vowel sounds- Ah eh ee oh oo etc.

But each vowel sound has many different colours- think of the difference between the A in BAT and the A in Father. Some vowel sounds will be too bright and sound ugly some will be too plummy and sound swallowed. The skill of the teacher is to find the exact vowel sound that maximises the quality of the voice and expresses emotion.

And those vowel sounds are the sounds used in the Italian language. So to a large extent we use the clear simple sounds of Italian even when we sing in English!

These are the vowel sounds;

A as in Father

E as in Bed

I (in italian is pronounced ee) as in Deep

O as in Socks

U ( in italian is pronounced oo) as in Cool
